Generic semaglutide in Canada

Every generic semaglutide product authorized in Canada, its status, what Ontario pays and the recalls so far.

Generic semaglutide arrived in Canada in 2026. Most of the generics copy Ozempic and are for type 2 diabetes. One, Sevmia, copies Wegovy and is for weight management. This page lists each one, what it is for, whether it is on pharmacy shelves, what Ontario's public plan pays, and the recalls so far.

A generic being approved does not mean a pharmacy has it, and does not mean a plan pays for it. Nothing here is a dose or a recommendation; switching products is a decision for the prescriber and pharmacist.

Health Canada said in June 2026 that six more generic semaglutide submissions were under review R43-C13, so this list will grow.

Sevmia, the Wegovy generic

Sevmia comes as one pen that gives 1 mg doses only. The monograph says other products are needed for the other doses A-C02, so it cannot cover a whole treatment course on its own. Its status in Health Canada's database is Approved, not Marketed, so it is not on pharmacy shelves yet.

Not generics: Plosbrio and Poviztra

Plosbrio and Poviztra are new product names from Novo Nordisk for the same medicines as Ozempic and Wegovy. They are not generics and are approved but not marketed R21-C457 R21-C458.

What public plans pay

Ontario is the clearest example. For the Ozempic 2 mg pen, Ontario Drug Benefit lists Ozempic at $227.94 but pays $78.141, the generic price, because the products are interchangeable R21-C497. Apo-Semaglutide is listed at $78.141 R21-C496. Sevmia is listed at $325.048 per pen but is off formulary, so the Ontario plan pays nothing for it R21-C503.

The provincial plans reviewed on this site still cover semaglutide only for type 2 diabetes, under criteria; see the coverage record for each province. Private plans set their own rules; their forms are on the prior authorization forms page.

Recalls so far

All four recalls below are Type II. They do not change the products' status in Health Canada's database.
